Course Structure
There are four major modules in the Complete Didgeridoo for Everyone course, and each major module can be explored on its own or in sequence. I recommend starting at the beginning to make sure you don't miss anything, but the journey is up to you!
Module 1 - Fundamentals - history and context, didgeridoo anatomy, the basic drone/lip buzz, tuning up the drone, making interesting sounds, starter rhythms, and more
Module 2 - Circular Breathing - circular breathing inside and out, throat/mouth anatomy, healing sleep apnea, smooth sound, effects like the wobble and bounce breath, basic rhythms, and more
Module 3 - Rhythm and Breath - using circular breathing in more rhythms, how to create interesting rhythms, rhythmic inspiration, more complex sounds & combinations, and more
Module 4 - Advanced Sounds and Techniques - a wide range of more complex techniques, tons of fun rhythms, the toot, the in-breath toot, taking your playing to the next level, and more
This is the complete course!
But . . .
It is still a work in progress. Early adopters will have the chance to make requests and offer input as I plan, write, and record it! This module includes all four of the above modules, which means a ton of content, more than enough to keep students busy for many months to come!
Benefits
Didgeridoo is more than an instrument. It is a way of life, a community connector, and a healing tool. In addition to all of the above, you will also find that learning didgeridoo helps you:
- Reduce stress - playing is amazing meditation once you find your flow, and meditation reduces stress hormone levels in the body!
- Relax - what better way to take a break from your hectic life than by playing!
- Connect with other people - didgeridoo players love meeting each other, hanging out, and jamming
- Sleep better - studies show that playing didge reduces and sometimes even eliminates sleep apnea - it helps you breathe!
- Heal yourself/others - deeper breathing and the vibration of the didgeridoo help the body heal in all kinds of ways!
What this course offers (that others often overlook):
- Lots of demonstration - learn by listening, watching, and playing along
- All concepts, techniques, and rhythms broken down into bite-sized pieces
- Teaching from multiple angles - I explain things in multiple ways to match multiple learning styles.
- The small, often invisible, "secret" tips and techniques that many instructors overlook but which are essential for learning!
In other words, I offer some of the clearest, most through didgeridoo instruction on the internet!
Feedback
"Circular breathing beautifully explained and taught here."
"Hey i would like to start by saying your videos are great and by far the best tutorials for didge i have found online and even helped me with circular breathing (after months of frustration)."
"Really helpful tutorials! As a 51 year old grandparent taking up didgeridoo for the first time, following several bouts of pneumonia, I can confirm that your tutorials got me hooked in no time! From first making a drone to circular breathing within 6 months..Thanks to you!! I am now good enough to play in public. Wish I had taken it up in my teens though..but better late than never!!!"
Who is this guy?
My name is David Yates, and I have been a teacher throughout my life, starting with peer tutoring as a 13 year old. In the 24 years since, I have taught everything from dance to juggling, math to parkour, and more. I have taught children, adults, and seniors, and I've worked with students with learning delays as well as advanced students. My specialty is breaking things down, teaching topics and skills in accessible, clear ways, and finding a range of ways to support my students. I have the unfailing attitude that you can do this, and this goes for every student I have ever had or will have. My "can do" attitude is infectious, and before long, you will feel your ability to learn increasing!
Your Instructor
David's life was forever changed for the better when he took the plunge and decided to learn didgeridoo in 2009. He quickly became a sought-after player in the Vancouver world music scene, and has since performed at festivals like Blessed Coast and Starbelly Jam, opened for the Desert Dwellers, and was even hired by Concordia College of Alberta to give a number of didgeridoo lectures and to play a number of pieces written for bell choir and didgeridoo! Seven years later, didgeridoo continues to be a constant source of delight, discovery, challenge, and fulfillment!
David has students from around the world - from Canada and the US, Mexico, and several countries in Europe!
In addition to playing didgeridoo, David is a longtime dancer, teacher, and performing artist. A member of the world fusion collective Naad (http://www.naad.ca) and a solo performer under the name Breathwood, he plays a wide range of sounds, not just didgeridoo - from the udu to the asalatos to the native flute to jaw harps and beyond - and loves accompanying yoga classes, playing at sound journeys, and sharing his love for music with children and adults of all ages!
Teaching is one of David's secret powers. He has a special knack for breaking down even the most challenging concepts into bite-sized pieces for students of all learning styles..

Frequently Asked Questions
How badly do you want to change your life?
Did you know that your ability to learn something exists almost entirely in your mind? It's true!
Here's my personal didgeridoo story:
I was quite intrigued by this strange and wonderful instrument for a long time. When I finally came across one in my early twenties, I knew I would be able to make a sound. I just knew.
My secret power
I happen to have a secret power: I know that if I want to learn something, no matter what it is - cooking, dance, computers, fire spinning, stilt walking, and more - I can learn it. And that's because I approach things with a really open mind. I get out of my own way, and I give my mind and body time to absorb the information on their own. Learning is more about openness first, real commitment second, and surrendering third. I somehow knew this at a pretty young age!
So when I picked up a didgeridoo for the first time, put it to my lips and blew, you know what happened?
I made a perfect sound! It was exactly the sound I was hoping to make, and it filled me with a lot of delight!
But then a funny thing happened. I put it down and didn't touch it again for 9 years!
The mental block
Why didn't I keep playing? I made a great sound within minutes of trying. Shouldn't that mean I was perfectly suited to playing as much didgeridoo as I wanted? Didn't a perfect sound mean I was ready for the next step?
Apparently not!
I stopped playing because I thought the next step - circular breathing, in my mind - was too hard, too mystical, too far out of reach for someone like me to learn. I had unconsciously decided that the next step to learning just wasn't fit for me! Somewhere in my mind and heart I had already given up - didgeridoo was for other people with special ability, but not me.
And so I didn't touch a didgeridoo for 9 years until a string of very small but profound events took place, and then didgeridoo changed my life forever!

I have one more offer for you
If you still aren't sure, I totally hear you. Any time I've bought on online course, I've wavered for at least a week or two before buying. I want my money to be well spent, after all!
Well, I have another secret power that I'd like to share with you!
I have a special knack for breaking down content - any content - into bite-sized pieces that pretty much any student can understand. My lifelong path has actually included teaching since I was tutor in 7th grade! That means I've been helping others learn for 22 years!
So, if you sign up for the entire course, I'd like to offer you one free hour of private instruction online. This is usually worth $60/hr! When you hit a wall (and you will), reach a plateau (which is likely), or have a question you just can't seem to answer on your own, contact me and we'll address your individual needs.
You can break the hour up into four 15 minute blocks, two 30 minute bits, or we can do it all at once. My goal is to help you remove as many obstructions as possible between you and your goal of playing didgeridoo.
